Zodiac Artist’s Book

In creating this artist’s book, I was excited to construct an original piece that was functional, interactive and aesthetically pleasing. My goal was to put as much care as possible into each design element: the binding, pages, inserts, and cover, to make a complete project that would showcase my craftsmanship and represent my passion for hands-on creativity.

Inspired by the similarity between the number of zodiac signs and the number of cards in a suit, I thought, why not combine them?

Screen printed with gold ink, this book is as much a piece of art as it is educational. On each star patterned page is a pocket with a screen printed card illustrating a zodiac symbol, and a hand-written description on the back detailing the zodiac’s associated traits.

Above are the designs that were put on transparent sheets for screen printing. Due to the imperfect nature of screen printing, hours of attempts were required to achieve a flawless image, given each card’s minute details and the quantity of printed elements.

I have always wanted to design my own set of playing cards. While I only created thirteen for this project, I hope to someday develop a full set.
